Elaphiti Islands Croatia: Dubrovnik’s Peaceful Island Escape

Destination Insights

Published by: Ema Matijas

Just a short cruise from Dubrovnik lies one of the Adriatic’s most rewarding island groups – the Elaphiti Islands. With crystal-clear waters, charming fishing villages, sandy beaches, hidden coves, and centuries of history, these islands offer everything that makes sailing in Croatia so special.

Unlike Dubrovnik’s busy streets, the Elaphiti archipelago moves at a slower pace. Here you’ll find quiet anchorages, waterfront restaurants, pine forests, olive groves, and authentic Dalmatian island life. Whether you’re exploring by yacht for a day or spending a peaceful night in one of the island harbours, the Elaphiti Islands are a destination that deserves a place on every Croatia sailing itinerary.

WHERE ARE THE ELAPHITI ISLANDS?

Located northwest of Dubrovnik, the Elaphiti Islands form a small archipelago stretching along Croatia’s southern coastline. The group consists of 13 islands, although only three are permanently inhabited:

  • Šipan
  • Lopud
  • Koločep

Together they are home to fewer than 900 residents, making them one of the quietest island groups in the Adriatic.

The name Elaphiti comes from the Ancient Greek word elaphos, meaning deer. Roman writer Pliny the Elder first mentioned the islands in the 1st century, claiming they were once inhabited by deer, a story that remains part of the islands’ enduring charm.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ELAPHITI ISLANDS

The Elaphiti Islands have welcomed many civilizations throughout history, including the Illyrians, Greeks, Romans, and Slavs.

During the time of the Republic of Dubrovnik, the islands became popular summer retreats for Dubrovnik’s noble families. Elegant stone villas, Renaissance palaces, churches, and monasteries were built across the islands, many of which still stand today.

Because the islands offered limited farmland, generations of locals turned to the sea. Skilled sailors, shipowners, and admirals helped shape Dubrovnik’s maritime heritage, creating a tradition that remains deeply connected to the islands.

THE THREE ISLANDS YOU SHOULD VISIT IN ELAPHITI ISLANDS

Šipan – The Largest Elaphiti Island

Šipan is the biggest island in the archipelago and the furthest from Dubrovnik. Unlike the other Elaphiti Islands, it is the only island where cars are allowed, making it easy to explore both of its beautiful villages:

  • Suđurađ
  • Šipanska Luka

The island is famous for its olive groves, vineyards, citrus trees, and peaceful countryside. In fact, Šipan once earned a place in the Guinness World Records for having the highest number of olive trees per capita on an island.

History lovers will appreciate its Renaissance villas and noble estates, while sailors enjoy the relaxed waterfront atmosphere and excellent dining options.

Lopud – Home to Croatia’s Famous Sandy Beach

Lopud is often considered the most picturesque of the Elaphiti Islands.

Completely car-free, the island offers a peaceful promenade lined with cafés, restaurants, and historic stone buildings. It is best known for Šunj Beach, one of Croatia’s most beautiful sandy beaches, where shallow turquoise water makes it ideal for families and swimming.

Beyond the beach, visitors can explore:

  • Franciscan Monastery
  • Church of St. Mary
  • Sutvrac Fortress
  • Beautiful gardens and walking paths
  • Lopud perfectly combines history, relaxation, and natural beauty.

Koločep – The Green Island

Closest to Dubrovnik, Koločep (locally called Kalamota) is a favourite day trip for both sailors and locals.

Like Lopud, there are no cars, allowing visitors to enjoy peaceful walking paths through pine forests and olive groves.

Highlights include:

  • The famous Blue Cave
  • Hidden swimming coves
  • Donje Čelo village
  • Historic churches
  • Scenic coastal walking trails
  • Its crystal-clear sea makes it one of the best snorkeling spots near Dubrovnik.

BEST PLACES TO DOCK

For yacht guests, the main harbours are:

Šipan

  • Suđurađ
  • Šipanska Luka

Both offer restaurants, cafés, shops, and a relaxed island atmosphere.

Lopud Harbour

Located directly in the village centre, the harbour provides easy access to restaurants, waterfront bars, and Šunj Beach.

Koločep Harbour

A smaller but charming harbour within walking distance of restaurants, cafés, and local amenities.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BEACHES

Šunj Beach (Lopud)

Without question, the island’s most famous beach.
Its long stretch of soft sand, shallow turquoise water, beach bars, and family-friendly atmosphere make it one of southern Croatia’s most popular beaches.

Donje Čelo Beach (Koločep)

A peaceful pebble beach surrounded by pine trees and crystal-clear water.

Bige Beach (Koločep)

A quieter hidden beach perfect for swimming away from the crowds.

Hidden Bays of Šipan

Šipan offers numerous secluded coves that are perfect for anchoring, swimming, and enjoying complete privacy during your yacht charter.

BEST THINGS TO DO

Besides relaxing on board your yacht, don’t miss these experiences:

  • Swim inside Koločep’s famous Blue Cave.
  • Walk to Šunj Beach on Lopud.
  • Explore Renaissance palaces in Suđurađ.
  • Visit historic monasteries and churches.
  • Hike to Velji Vrh on Šipan for panoramic island views.
  • Wander through olive groves and vineyards.
  • Discover hidden swimming coves only accessible by boat.
  • Enjoy sunset drinks overlooking the Adriatic.

WHY VISIT THE ELAPHITI ISLANDS BY YACHT?

While ferries connect the islands with Dubrovnik, exploring them by yacht offers a completely different experience.

You’ll enjoy:

  • Access to secluded bays unreachable by land.
  • Flexible itineraries between islands.
  • Peaceful overnight anchorages.
  • Swimming in crystal-clear water away from the crowds.
  • Waterfront restaurants accessible directly from your yacht.

The short sailing distances also make the Elaphiti Islands an ideal first or last stop on a Dubrovnik yacht charter.

READY TO DISCOVER ELAPHITI ISLANDS?

The Elaphiti Islands perfectly capture the quieter side of the Adriatic. Whether you’re strolling through the car-free streets of Lopud, discovering Renaissance history on Šipan, snorkeling around Koločep’s Blue Cave, or enjoying fresh seafood beside the sea, every island offers its own unique character.

From hidden coves to waterfront restaurants and unforgettable sunsets, the Elaphiti Islands are best explored by sea. Contact our team and let us help you plan your perfect Adriatic escape.
