Kornati Islands: Discover Croatia’s Most Spectacular Archipelago

Destination Insights

Published by: Ema Matijas

Few places in Croatia capture the feeling of escaping into nature quite like the Kornati Islands. Scattered across the northern Dalmatian Adriatic, this spectacular archipelago is a world of dramatic limestone cliffs, secluded bays, crystal-clear waters and untouched Mediterranean landscapes. With almost 150 islands, islets and reefs, the Kornati Islands are made for exploring by yacht. Spend the morning swimming in a quiet bay, enjoy a long lunch at a traditional konoba (Dalmatian and Croatian tavern) and spend the afternoon surrounded by nothing but the sea and rugged island scenery.

Part of the archipelago is protected as Kornati National Park, adding to its unique character and making it one of the most memorable destinations to include in a Croatian yacht charter.

THE BEAUTY OF KORNATI NATIONAL PARK

The heart of the archipelago is Kornati National Park was established in 1980. The landscape is instantly recognizable, with bare limestone islands rising from the deep blue Adriatic and dramatic cliffs facing the open sea.

What makes the Kornati Islands so unique?

  • The famous “crowns” – dramatic vertical cliffs rising above the open Adriatic and best admired from the water.
  • Untouched landscapes – the islands are largely uninhabited, with no large resorts or busy coastal promenades.
  • Traditional scenery – old dry-stone walls, olive trees and rugged Mediterranean hills are scattered across the islands.
  • Secluded bays – countless quiet coves make it easy to find your own peaceful spot for swimming and relaxing.
  • A true yacht experience – spend the day cruising between islands, stopping whenever a beautiful bay catches your eye.

For guests travelling by yacht, this combination of untouched nature, clear waters and complete freedom is what makes the Kornati Islands so special.

A LANDSCAPE SHAPED BY THE ADRIATIC

The unusual appearance of the Kornati Islands is the result of thousands of years of natural changes. Rising sea levels after the last Ice Age transformed former mountain ranges and valleys into the islands and channels we see today.

Human history is also present throughout the archipelago, although you do not need to be a history enthusiast to appreciate it. Dry-stone walls, olive groves, old settlements and archaeological remains tell the story of generations who used the islands for fishing, farming and sailing.

Today, nature is very much at the center of the Kornati experience.

Some of the things that make the landscape so distinctive include:

  • Dramatic limestone cliffs rising directly from the sea
  • Crystal-clear Adriatic waters
  • Secluded bays and natural anchorages
  • Traditional dry-stone walls and olive groves
  • Almost completely undeveloped islands
  • Incredible views across the surrounding archipelago

It is easy to understand why the Kornati have inspired artists and travelers for generations.

THE BEST BAYS AND SWIMMING SPOTS

One of the biggest pleasures of exploring the Kornati Islands by yacht is having the freedom to choose your own swimming spot.
The archipelago is filled with sheltered bays, rocky coves and beautiful stretches of coastline where you can spend an hour or an entire afternoon – swimming and relaxing.

LOJENA BEACH

Located on the island of Levrnaka, Lojena Beach is one of the most famous beaches in the Kornati. Its white pebbles contrast beautifully with the clear turquoise water, while the surrounding hills provide a spectacular natural backdrop.

The beach is accessible from the anchorage by a short walk, making it an easy addition to a day spent exploring Levrnaka. For many visitors, this is exactly what they imagined when they pictured a Croatian island escape: clear water, untouched nature and no city in sight.

OPAT BAY

On the southern side of Kornat, Opat Bay is another popular stop for yachts.

The bay combines beautiful scenery with the convenience of having a local restaurant nearby, making it an ideal place to spend a relaxed afternoon. Drop anchor, take a swim and enjoy lunch overlooking the Adriatic before continuing your journey.

ŽUT

Although technically outside Kornati National Park, Žut is closely connected to the Kornati sailing experience and is often included in itineraries through the archipelago. Compared with some of the more rugged Kornati islands, Žut has a greener landscape, with olive trees and Mediterranean vegetation surrounding its peaceful bays.

Strunac Bay is particularly popular for swimming and relaxing, while the island’s traditional konobas make it an excellent place to stop for lunch or dinner.

KOSIRINA BAY

If your yacht charter includes Murter, make sure to leave some time for Kosirina Bay. Surrounded by pine trees and clear water, it is one of those places where you can easily lose track of time.

It is a perfect spot for a swim, a paddle or simply relaxing on board while taking in the scenery.

DINING IN THE KORNATI

A yacht charter through the Kornati Islands would not be complete without experiencing the local cuisine.

Dining here is all about simplicity and fresh ingredients. The Adriatic provides an abundance of fish and seafood, while the islands and surrounding region are known for olive oil, seasonal vegetables, herbs and traditional Dalmatian specialties.

Many restaurants are located directly on the waterfront, meaning lunch can become one of the highlights of the day.

Expect dishes such as:

  • Freshly caught Adriatic fish
  • Grilled seafood and shellfish
  • Octopus and traditional seafood dishes
  • Dalmatian-style lamb
  • Seasonal vegetables
  • Homemade olive oil
  • Local cheeses and traditional desserts

One of the pleasures of eating in the Kornati is that there is no need to overcomplicate things.

DISCOVER MURTER

Often described as the gateway to the Kornati Islands, Murter plays an important role in the region’s nautical culture. The island is home to four main settlements – Murter, Tisno, Jezera and Betina – each with its own character.

Murter town is the largest and offers a relaxed combination of traditional stone houses, narrow streets, waterfront restaurants and cafés. It is an easy place to spend an afternoon wandering around before returning to the yacht.

Betina is particularly interesting for its long tradition of wooden shipbuilding. The Betina Wooden Shipbuilding Museum celebrates this unique part of the island’s heritage and offers an insight into the traditional craft that has shaped the local maritime community. For panoramic views, head towards St. Rocco Church, located on Vršina hill between Murter and Betina. The short climb is rewarded with beautiful views across the island and surrounding Adriatic.

EXPLORE KORNATI BEYOND THE BEACH

Although swimming and relaxing are likely to be high on the list during a yacht charter, there is plenty more to discover around the Kornati Islands.
The underwater world is particularly impressive. Clear visibility, rocky reefs, underwater walls and abundant marine life make the area ideal for snorkeling and diving. The islands are also home to traces of centuries-old life, from traditional stone structures to archaeological remains.

One of the most interesting landmarks is Toreta fortress on Kornat. Built on a hill overlooking the surrounding landscape, the fortress offers a completely different perspective of the archipelago.

Nearby, you can also find the remains of an early Christian basilica, while the small church on Piškera is another reminder of the importance of the islands to generations of fishermen.

For those who enjoy exploring on foot, even a short walk away from the water can reveal a completely different side of the Kornati.
The rocky landscape, old olive trees and traditional dry-stone walls make the islands feel wonderfully connected to their past.

WHEN TO VISIT THE KORNATI ISLANDS

The best time to explore the Kornati Islands by yacht is during the warmer months, when the Adriatic is perfect for swimming and spending long days outdoors.

Late spring and early autumn can be particularly appealing for guests who prefer a quieter atmosphere, while the height of summer brings the classic Croatian island experience of warm weather, long evenings and endless time in the sea.
Whenever you visit, the key is to leave enough time in your itinerary. The Kornati are not a destination you want to rush through.

Allow yourself time to:

  • Swim in secluded bays
  • Enjoy yachts water toys
  • Explore the islands on foot
  • Enjoy a long lunch by the sea
  • Snorkel in the clear Adriatic
  • Discover traditional villages on Murter
  • Watch the sunset from the yacht

WHY THE KORNATI BELONG ON YOUR YACHT ITINERARY

There are countless beautiful places along the Croatian coast, but the Kornati Islands offer something distinctly different

They feel remote without being difficult to reach, wild without being inaccessible and peaceful without feeling isolated. A day here can be as active or relaxed as you want it to be.

For guests travelling on a crewed yacht charter, the experience becomes even more effortless. With the crew taking care of navigation, meals and everything in between, there is nothing left to do but enjoy the scenery and make the most of your time on the Adriatic. Sometimes the most memorable part of a yacht charter is not visiting as many places as possible – it is finding one beautiful corner of the Adriatic and staying there a little longer
