Split or Dubrovnik: Where Should Your Croatian Yacht Charter Begin?

Adriatic Yacht charter starting point - Split - Dubrovnik

When planning a yacht charter in Croatia, one of the first decisions is also one of the most important: where should you begin?

Split and Dubrovnik are Croatia’s two key yacht charter gateways, both with international airports, excellent marinas and immediate access to some of the Adriatic’s most beautiful islands. Yet they open the door to quite different cruising experiences. Split places you in the heart of Central Dalmatia, surrounded by islands and countless possibilities in almost every direction. Dubrovnik sits further south, offering access to the Elaphiti Islands, Mljet and Korčula, as well as the possibility of continuing towards Montenegro.

There is no wrong starting point. The better choice depends on what you want your week on the Adriatic to look like.

Starting Your Yacht Charter in Split

Split is one of the most popular starting points for a yacht charter in Croatia, and its location explains why.

From the moment you leave the mainland behind, some of Croatia’s best-known islands are within easy cruising distance. Brač, Šolta, Hvar and Vis can all form part of a seven-day itinerary, while a longer charter opens the possibility of continuing towards Korčula, Lastovo or further south.

For guests who want variety, Split is difficult to beat.

One day might begin in a quiet bay off Šolta and end with dinner in Hvar Town. Another could be spent swimming around the Pakleni Islands before continuing towards Vis, where fishing villages, hidden coves and a slower island rhythm offer a completely different side of the Adriatic.

Islands Within Easy Reach of Split

Brač

Known for Zlatni Rat, but there is much more to the island than its most photographed beach. Small coastal towns, sheltered bays and traditional restaurants make Brač an easy first or final stop.

Hvar & the Pakleni Islands

Hvar combines historic architecture, restaurants and nightlife with some of the best anchoring possibilities in Central Dalmatia. Just offshore, the Pakleni Islands offer clear water and secluded bays that feel far removed from the energy of Hvar Town.

Vis

Further offshore, Vis has a character of its own. The island’s relative isolation has helped preserve its quieter atmosphere, while nearby caves, beaches and small bays make it particularly rewarding to explore from the water.

Šolta

Often overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbours, Šolta is ideal for quieter anchorages and relaxed first or last days on board.

Getting to Split

Split Airport is around 25 kilometres from the city and provides numerous direct European connections during the Mediterranean charter season.

The airport’s proximity to Split, Trogir and several major marinas also makes embarkation relatively straightforward. For guests arriving from elsewhere in Europe, this accessibility is one of Split’s biggest practical advantages.
During the summer season, it is connected with a broad network of European cities, including major international hubs such as London, Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Paris and Zurich. For guests travelling from North/South America, Asia or other long-haul destinations, these hubs provide straightforward one-stop connections to the Croatian coast.

Starting Your Yacht Charter in Dubrovnik

Beginning in Dubrovnik creates a different rhythm.

Rather than being surrounded immediately by several large islands, the route gradually unfolds north through the Southern Adriatic – or south towards Montenegro.

Dubrovnik itself deserves time before departure. The UNESCO-listed Old Town, medieval walls and distinctive terracotta rooftops make it one of the Mediterranean’s most recognisable cities. But once seen from the deck of a yacht, the transition from city to open sea is just as memorable.

Within a short cruise, the crowds disappear and the Elaphiti Islands take their place.

Where Can You Cruise From Dubrovnik?

The Elaphiti Islands

Koločep, Lopud and Šipan sit just northwest of Dubrovnik and are a natural first stop. Small villages, pine-covered coastline and sheltered bays make the archipelago particularly suited to a relaxed beginning to the charter.

Mljet

One of Croatia’s greenest islands, Mljet is known for its national park, saltwater lakes and dense forests. Arriving by yacht allows you to combine time ashore with quiet anchorages along the island’s coastline.

Korčula

Continue north and the landscape shifts again. Korčula brings together vineyards, small bays and one of the Adriatic’s most beautiful historic towns.

Montenegro

Dubrovnik also works particularly well as a gateway for itineraries continuing south. Crossing into Montenegro opens the possibility of cruising through the Bay of Kotor, visiting Perast and Kotor and spending time around Porto Montenegro.
For guests who want to experience more than one country during their charter, this can make Dubrovnik the stronger starting point.

Getting to Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is located approximately 20 kilometres from Dubrovnik and similarly benefits from an extensive seasonal network. Alongside connections with major European hubs, Dubrovnik also offers seasonal direct services from destinations including Dubai and Istanbul, which can make it particularly convenient for guests travelling from the Middle East and connecting markets further afield.

Split vs Dubrovnik: Which Is Better for Island Hopping?

For classic Croatian island hopping, Split has the advantage.

The concentration of islands around Central Dalmatia means relatively short cruising distances can connect destinations that feel remarkably different from one another.

A typical route could include:

Split → Šolta → Vis → Hvar → Pakleni Islands → Brač → Split

It works particularly well for guests who want a combination of swimming, restaurants, nightlife, small towns and days spent at anchor without covering excessive distances.

Vis fortress

From Dubrovnik, the route is generally more linear:

Dubrovnik → Elaphiti Islands → Mljet → Korčula → Lastovo

Rather than jumping between several nearby islands, the charter naturally progresses along the coast and through the Southern Dalmatian archipelagos.

Mljet

Neither approach is better – they simply create different charter experiences.

What About a Split to Dubrovnik Yacht Charter?

You do not necessarily have to choose between them.

A one-way yacht charter from Split to Dubrovnik, or the reverse, is one of the most complete ways to experience the Croatian coast.
Instead of returning to the same marina, each day moves the charter further south or north.

A possible route might look like:

Split → Hvar → Vis → Korčula → Mljet → Šipan → Dubrovnik

Along the way, the scenery gradually changes from the lively islands of Central Dalmatia to the greener, quieter landscapes of the south.

For guests visiting Croatia for the first time, this type of itinerary provides an excellent overview of the region without repeating destinations.

One-way charters do, however, depend on the yacht’s schedule and availability, so they are best discussed during the early planning stages.

Which Airport Is More Convenient?

Both cities have international airports, although flight availability varies according to departure city and season.

Split Airport (SPU) generally offers particularly strong seasonal connections with European cities and is conveniently positioned for embarkation around Split and Trogir.

Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) also receives numerous international flights during the summer and is approximately 20 kilometres from Dubrovnik.

For guests arriving by private aviation, both destinations can also be incorporated into private flight arrangements, followed by a road transfer directly to the yacht.

For a one-way charter, flying into one city and departing from the other can make the journey particularly simple:

Fly into Split → charter south → fly home from Dubrovnik.

No backtracking required.

Choose Split If…

Split is likely to suit you if you want plenty of islands within relatively short cruising distances, a mix of lively destinations and secluded anchorages, or easy access to Hvar, Vis, Brač and the Pakleni Islands. It is also an excellent starting point for first-time visitors who want to experience several different sides of the Croatian coast within one week.

Choose Dubrovnik If…

Dubrovnik may be the better choice if you are drawn to the quieter Southern Adriatic, want to explore Mljet and the Elaphiti Islands, or are considering a route that continues towards Montenegro. It also works beautifully for guests who want to combine a few days exploring Dubrovnik with their time on board.

Or Let the Yacht Decide

There is another factor that is often more important than the starting marina: the right yacht.

MAIA & ACAPELLA

Charter yachts move throughout the season, and their embarkation points depend on previous and following bookings. Sometimes the yacht that suits your group best may already be positioned in Split, Dubrovnik or somewhere in between.
This is where keeping the itinerary flexible can open up better possibilities.

At Otium Yachts, we look at the complete picture – the yacht, crew, dates, embarkation point and the places you would like to experience – before suggesting a route. A good Croatian yacht charter is not simply about fitting as many islands as possible into seven days. It is about choosing a route that works naturally with the yacht, weather and the way you want to spend your time.

Whether that journey begins beneath the palms of Split or the walls of Dubrovnik, the Adriatic takes care of the rest.
